Skin Biopsy

A short in-office procedure that takes a small skin sample and sends it to the lab to confirm a diagnosis.

A biopsy is suggested when a spot or rash cannot be confidently identified by exam alone, or when ruling out skin cancer is the responsible next step. It is a way of getting a real answer rather than treating a guess.

The area is cleaned and numbed with a small injection, then a sample is taken. The whole thing is usually brief. Depending on the type of biopsy, you may need a stitch or two, and you will know which applies to you beforehand.

There is more than one way to take a sample, and the choice depends on the location, the depth involved, and what question the lab needs to answer. You will be told which method is being used and what the site will look like afterward.

A pathology lab evaluates the sample, and our office contacts you with the results and what they mean. Depending on what comes back, the next step may be no further treatment, periodic monitoring, or additional care, and you will be walked through it.

Aftercare is simple. Keep the area clean and covered as directed, avoid soaking it, and protect it from the sun while it heals. You will get written instructions, and our office is a phone call away if anything looks off.
